Under Pressure …

Have you ever noticed a cloud of mist and water blowing in the wind away from property while the sprinklers are running? If you have, chances are the sprinkler heads are operating under too much water pressure. Spray heads and rotor heads apply water most efficiently at the manufacture recommended 30 psi and 45 psi. Occasionally, City water pressure can exceed 100 psi in some areas of a town. Excess pressure delivered to sprinkler heads results in a smaller water droplet, which is easily affected by the wind. This means a good portion of the water you are using is blowing away from your property or evaporating.

The best way to control high pressure is to use pressure regulating heads, these heads improve performance and deliver larger water droplets, thus creating less waste. Pressure regulating heads maintain the outlet pressure to the optimal levels. A pressure regulating valve can also be used.

The City of Frisco started requiring pressure regulation in 2009 on irrigation system installations. If you live in the City of Frisco and have concerns or questions regarding pressure regulation, please schedule a free sprinkler check up with one of their Licensed Irrigators and check out their great video on what to expect during your check-up.

If you live outside the City of Frisco, check your City website to see if they have a similar regulation and offer a free sprinkler check up with one of their Licensed Irrigators.

Stay water wise!
