Property Management Blog

Hi, I’m Suzanne Athey, owner of Team Athey & Remarkable Property Management. First let me start by wishing you and yours a very Happy Holiday! I know it has been an unusual year that has stretched the limits of many, and we’ve come to the end of the year and the lockdown is still happening. Now what? I say let’s don’t pretend like it’s a normal holiday, let’s accept the fact that 2020 is different and celebrate with some untraditional holiday traditions.

Are you ready for a little holiday inspiration? Team Athey has put our heads together to come up with a few suggestions of ways to celebrate and enjoy the season while properly social distancing. Believe me, we had to stretch our imagination and think way, way outside of the box for some of these. But we believe they’ll make the 2020 season a little brighter. Who knows? Maybe they’ll become a permanent source of joy for your family, and friends.

NUMBER 1. RETRO RECIPES. Think back to yesteryear when the holidays weren’t so commercial. People did things like make popcorn balls and cheese balls. Get out grandma’s recipes to figure it out. Or scan the internet. Bring out the eggnog, find the old gelatin molds and prepare for cherry jello with marshmallows. Crank up the oven and bake some thumbprint cookies or yule logs. What’s old can be new again. And it can be fun for every one of all ages. Except if you put alcohol in the eggnog, don’t give it to the kids. Which brings us to another idea.

NUMBER 2. HIS & HER HOME SPA TREATMENTS. Sure, it is fun to see children’s eyes light up with the magic of the season, but let’s face it, us adults could use a little more fun this year too. Starting with a relaxing home spa facial for two. Or maybe his and her massages. No, you don’t have to hire a masseuse. (Although that’s a good idea, too.) Again you can google for instructions. And while you’re at maybe you can buy some sexy pj’s for you and your significant other. Think of it as a gift that keeps on giving all year long. (Did I really just say that? I guess I did. Let’s move on.)

NUMBER 3. HOLIDAY KARAOKE. Remember how people used to gather around and sing? Or at least they did in the old shows like “It’s a Wonderful Life”.  You can do that too. You don’t have to buy a karaoke machine. (However they are very affordable.) Just find some joyful music lyrics. Distribute to everyone in the room, or on a Zoom call, and start singing. Loud. And gleefully. Never mind if you can’t carry a tune. That will make the event that much more fun. And by chance if someone is musically inclined let them have the spotlight for a while. I promise, Holiday Karaoke will be a fun moment to remember in both a good and bad way.

NUMBER 4. TELL OTHERS WHAT YOU THINK. Sit down and write out the many ways you appreciate the people in your life. Give it some thought. What qualities do you admire about each of your family members, friends, and colleagues? Commit your thoughts to paper on a beautiful card and give (mail or email) to each one individually. This is a simple gift, but one they will cherish. You know they will keep it. Imagine how special they will feel each time they read your sentiments. Especially in a bittersweet year like this one!

NUMBER 5. DECORATE WITH INTENTION. There is no faster way to lift spirits than to deck your house out for the holidays. (Especially since most of us are staying home more than ever this year.) Put up the tree. Create some new ornaments together. Get out decorations you haven’t used in a while. Don’t blow your budget, but consider splurging on a few new looks. After all, it is definitely not the same-old same-old this season. Go over the top. Impress the neighbors with your outdoor light show. Or just light a few candles and cozy up to a good book as you stay home alone. Either way, you’ll enjoy it more if you let it glow . . . let it glow . . . let it glow.

Yes, 2020 has been quite a year. Through flexibility, ingenuity, and positivity we’ve made it to the holidays by helping each other in ways we never would’ve imagined even a year ago. Now let’s move forward holding each other up.

Our company slogan is “Our Family Takes Care of Your Family.” And we mean it, we want to be there for you and yours. Knowing this, Team Athey hopes you enjoy our untraditional holiday traditions brainstorm of ideas. They are our gift to you along with best wishes as we ring in the New Year!
